Matcha vs Coffee
✓ Updated October 15, 2026

| Matcha | Brewed coffee | |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | About 26–35 mg per gram of powder in tested commercial matchas (Plant Foods Hum Nutr, 2023), so it depends on how much you use | ~96 mg / 8 oz (Mayo Clinic) |
| L-theanine | Naturally present (tea) | None |
Why people say matcha feels "smoother"
Tea naturally contains L-theanine, and studies of L-theanine combined with caffeine report some attention benefits (Owen et al., 2008). The amount in a cup of matcha varies, and we found no trial directly testing matcha vs coffee on focus.
Which to choose
Matcha if you want a tea ritual and likely less caffeine at a typical 1–2 g serving. Coffee if you want a reliable, well-studied dose. See L-Theanine and Caffeine.
