Ownership Disclosure

Evident Health LLC owns Sleep Karma. We built Sleep Karma after testing 25 mouth tape brands and finding none that met our standards for adhesive safety, material quality, and ingredient transparency. Sleep Karma is scored using the same five-criteria methodology applied to every brand below. Seven brands earned our recommendation (score ≥ 7.0). If you’d rather choose a brand we don’t own, see the full rankings — VIO2 (7.8), MyoTape (7.5), and Dryft Sleep (7.3) all scored well. Sales of Sleep Karma fund Evident’s independent research.

What’s On Your Skin

Not All Adhesives Are Safe

Mouth tape sits on your face for 7–9 hours a night. Yet when we researched 46 brands, fewer than a third disclosed their adhesive ingredients on packaging or their website. Of those that did, several contained compounds flagged by the EWG Skin Deep database and the EU’s ECHA SCIP registry for skin sensitization with repeated use. That’s why material safety is weighted heaviest in our rankings.

Fewer than a third of the 46 brands we researched disclosed their adhesive ingredients on packaging or their website.

How We Tested

Why Mouth Tape?

Mouth taping promotes nasal breathing during sleep, which has been linked to reduced snoring, fewer nighttime wake-ups, and less morning dry mouth. It’s a simple, low-cost intervention that’s moved from niche biohacking circles into mainstream sleep hygiene.

But not all tapes are created equal. Some use harsh adhesives that irritate skin. Others don’t hold through the night. A few contain ingredients flagged by EWG Skin Deep and ECHA for potential skin sensitization. The right tape should be safe enough to wear every night and reliable enough that you forget it’s there.

Our methodology

We researched 46 mouth tape brands using verified data from brand sites, lab reports, and third-party databases. 15 brands were tested firsthand over multiple nights by two testers. Every brand is scored on the same 5-criteria system.

Sleep Karma Mouth Tape

Sleep Karma scored highest across every category in our test. It uses an ISO-10993-1-certified adhesive paired with breathable bamboo-silk fabric — a combination we didn’t find in any other brand. The tape seals firmly, flexes with your face through the night, and lifts off in the morning without pain or residue. Our testers reported noticeably fewer wake-ups and less snoring within the first few nights.

It also comes with extras you won’t find elsewhere: a bamboo nightstand holder, a travel case, and access to a dedicated sleep coach.

What we liked

  • +ISO-certified, non-toxic adhesive
  • +Breathable bamboo-silk fabric
  • +Zero residue on removal
  • +Best sleep scores in our trial
  • +Includes stand, case, and coach access

Our concerns

  • No breathing vent option
  • Adhesive feels slightly firm on first removal
  • Only available online (not in stores)

I’m a dentist and I recommend mouth taping to patients with dry mouth issues. Sleep Karma is the only brand I feel comfortable suggesting because of the ISO-certified adhesive. I use it myself every night.

Switched from Hostage Tape after getting rashes. Night and day difference. The bamboo silk material feels premium, not like medical tape. Zero residue in the morning. Already on my third box.

Took me about three nights to get used to the feeling. First night I pulled it off at 3am without realizing. By night four it clicked — slept through and woke up with it still on. Adhesive is firm at first but the material is genuinely soft. Wish they’d offer a sample pack before committing to 30.

Dryft Sleep Tape

7.3
out of 10
Dryft Sleep Tape

Dryft Sleep is the friendliest tape for sensitive skin thanks to its ultra-soft fabric and gentle silicone adhesive. Made in USA (Los Angeles), with a built-in breathing vent and beard-friendly design. But that gentle hold is also its trade-off: corners lifted on restless nights, and the fiddly alignment tabs made application clumsy.

What we liked

  • +Very gentle on sensitive skin
  • +Built-in breathing vent
  • +Made in USA, beard-friendly

Our concerns

  • Weak hold — lifts on restless nights
  • Fiddly to apply
  • No independent lab testing

SomniFix

7.1
out of 10
SomniFix

Somnifix’s mesh breathing vent is a clever idea for people nervous about mouth taping for the first time. But in practice, the vent weakens the seal and allows mouth breathing — which defeats the purpose. The adhesive is also inconsistent: it held fine on some faces but peeled quickly on others. A good concept that doesn’t quite deliver.

Hostage Tape

5.9
out of 10
Hostage Tape

Hostage Tape has the strongest brand presence in the mouth tape category. The adhesive holds well — arguably too well, with multiple reports of painful removal and skin irritation. No published safety certifications or independent lab testing. BBB D rating. Active lawsuit regarding manufacturing origin claims.

#22 of 46

Adellina

3.9
out of 10
Adellina

Adellina offers strong overnight hold at the lowest price point we tested. However, it scored low in our ranking due to a lack of published safety certifications, no independent lab testing, and limited transparency about adhesive ingredients. A budget option for users who prioritize price over verified safety data.

What 30 Nights of Testing Actually Looks Like

We didn’t just read the labels — we wore every tape to bed, tracked our sleep, and kept a nightly diary. Here’s what that actually looked like.

They’ve all arrived. Pine table can barely hold them all. This is going to be a long month...

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

For most healthy adults, yes — mouth taping is safe for nightly use. It promotes nasal breathing, which is how your body prefers to breathe during sleep. The key safety variable is the adhesive itself, not the act of taping. Look for tapes with medical-grade, certified adhesives (like ISO 10993-1) rather than generic ones. It’s not recommended for people with nasal obstructions, untreated moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or children. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor first.

One of our testers is a side sleeper who moves a lot — and Sleep Karma stayed on through every night of our 7-night trial. Not all tapes perform as well though. Dryft Sleep, for example, had corners lift during restless nights. Hold strength was one of our four core testing criteria specifically because of this concern.

Yes for most beards. Mouth tape adheres to the skin around your lips, not to facial hair. Sleep Karma works fine with stubble and trimmed beards. Very full, long beards may reduce adhesion, but the tape targets the lip area where hair is typically minimal. We’ve had multiple bearded testers use it without issues.

You can. Quality mouth tapes are a gentle prompt, not an airtight seal. You can open your mouth with moderate effort — if your nose gets congested mid-sleep, the tape will yield. The first few nights, mouth breathers may find the tape comes off as they adjust. That’s completely normal. Most people are fully adapted within 3–5 nights.

Fair question. Sleep Karma uses ISO-10993-1-certified adhesive and bamboo-silk fabric — materials that cost meaningfully more than the generic adhesives and synthetic fabrics in most cheap tapes. It also includes a bamboo nightstand holder, travel case, and access to a sleep coach. At $0.80 per night with the current discount, we think it’s reasonable for something on your face 8 hours a night, every night. But Adellina at $0.67/night is a decent budget alternative if cost is the priority.

Our Top Pick — 46 Brands Researched

Our Recommendation

If you’re going to try mouth taping, start with something safe enough to use every night. Sleep Karma scored highest in our test across safety, comfort, and hold — with independently verified ISO 10993-1 adhesive certification.
