Best Low-Acid Coffee
✓ Updated October 15, 2026

"Low-acid" coffee is marketed to people who get heartburn or stomach upset from coffee. The evidence is mixed, so here's what the studies show and how to choose.
What the research shows
- Dark roast: in 9 healthy volunteers, a dark roast stimulated less gastric acid secretion than a medium roast. It had more N-methylpyridinium (87 vs 29 mg/L) and less chlorogenic acid (PubMed).
- "Low-acid" processing: a randomized, double-blind trial in 30 coffee-sensitive people found no meaningful difference in heartburn, regurgitation, or dyspepsia between a low-acid (conduction-roasted) coffee and conventional coffee (PubMed).
- Dewaxed coffee: a 2022 pilot study of 40 people with GERD found dewaxed coffee reduced heartburn and regurgitation vs standard coffee. It's preliminary (Nutrients).
How to choose
- Try a dark roast first. It has the most direct evidence.
- If you buy a "low-acid" brand, look for published pH or testing data, not just a label claim.
- Track your own symptoms for a week. Individual response varies.
- If you have frequent heartburn, talk to a clinician.
We'll add brand picks after Evident testing.
