How to Stop Mouth Breathing While Sleeping
Fix the nose first, then train the habit. What the research supports, what it doesn't, and the signs that mean you should get checked for sleep apnea.

Quick Summary
Most nighttime mouth breathing is a workaround for a nose that is not moving enough air. Open the nose first. Tape is a habit tool after that, not a treatment.

Why you breathe through your mouth at night
Your nose filters, warms, and humidifies air. When nasal resistance rises, you switch to the mouth. Causes include a cold, sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis. A 2020 meta-analysis of observational studies linked allergic rhinitis to more snoring and sleep-disordered breathing. The authors graded that evidence low to very low (Liu et al., PLOS ONE 2020).
Structure can block the nose too: a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, polyps, and in children, enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Sleeping on your back lets the jaw fall open. Sleep apnea is the reason to get checked before you try home fixes.
Signs: waking with a dry mouth or sore throat, snoring, morning bad breath, or drool on the pillow.
Seven steps
- Check whether your nose is actually clear. If you cannot breathe comfortably through it while awake, do not tape your mouth.
- Treat congestion and allergies. Saline rinses can help. Do not use decongestant sprays for more than a few days unless a clinician says so.
- Open the nasal valve with an external strip or an internal dilator if the nose feels tight.
- Sleep on your side. Back sleeping lets the jaw drop.
- Cut evening alcohol and keep the bedroom air from getting very dry.
- Try myofunctional exercises. A 2015 review of 9 small adult studies found they roughly halved the apnea-hypopnea index. That is a complement, not a treatment.
- Once your nose is clear, mouth tape can retrain the habit. It is not for a blocked nose, and it does not treat sleep apnea.

What our Sleep Pilot found
Evident’s observational pilot followed 29 adults across 81 nightly logs using Sleep Karma mouth tape. Average self-rated sleep quality was 7.1 with tape and 5.7 without. Dry mouth was reported on 12% of taped logs and 59% of untaped logs. It was not randomized or blinded, and Sleep Karma is our brand. Full results.
When to see a doctor
- Loud snoring with gasping, choking, or pauses.
- Daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or high blood pressure.
- A nose that is blocked most nights, or blocked on one side.
- A child who mouth-breathes or snores regularly.
- Nausea, reflux, or vomiting risk at night, or use after sedatives or alcohol.
Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea needs a diagnosis and treatment from a clinician. Mouth tape does not treat it and can hide symptoms. Do not use tape as a substitute for medical care, including CPAP if a doctor has prescribed it.
Our verdict
Open the nose, change position, then consider tape only if nasal breathing is easy while you are awake. The tape studies are small. The serious symptoms belong with a clinician.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often, once the nose is clear: side sleeping, nasal strips, myofunctional exercises, and, for adults who can already nose-breathe, mouth tape.
It is linked to dry mouth, snoring, and poorer sleep, and it can signal a blocked nose or sleep-disordered breathing.
It keeps the lips closed while you wear it. Evidence is limited, and it is unsafe if your nose is blocked.
They do different jobs. Strips open the nose. Tape closes the mouth. Many people need the nose open first.
Lying down increases nasal congestion for many people, and the jaw relaxes in sleep.
Yes. It is one of the most common reasons people wake with a dry mouth.
This is not medical advice and not a treatment for sleep apnea. Mouth tape is only for adults who can breathe comfortably through the nose. Evident and Sleep Karma are the same company. Evident does not use affiliate links.
