Oil of Oregano vs Black Seed Oil: Should You Take Them Together?
Ads for oregano-plus-black-seed softgels are everywhere. These two oils have very different amounts of human research behind them. Here is what each has been studied for, and what a combo can and cannot tell you.

Quick Summary
If you are choosing one, black seed oil has far more human research. The combination itself has not been studied.
Black seed oil vs oil of oregano
| Feature | Black seed oil | Oil of oregano |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Cold-pressed Nigella sativa seeds | Steam-distilled oregano leaf oil, usually diluted in olive oil |
| Key compound | Thymoquinone | Carvacrol, plus thymol |
| Human evidence | Moderate. Meta-analyses of randomized trials on lipids, glucose, and blood pressure. | Limited. Small nasal-spray trials. Almost no swallowed-oil trials. |
| Studied for | Cholesterol, fasting glucose, HbA1c, and blood-pressure markers | Nasal and sinus comfort as a spray, not oral immune effects |
| Typical studied dose | About 1 to 3 g/day of oil or powder in many trials | No established oral dose |
| Common downsides | Stomach upset. May add to glucose or blood-pressure drugs. | Heartburn, stomach upset, and nausea at higher doses. |
There is no large trial that compares the two oils head to head.
What black seed oil has been studied for
A 2020 meta-analysis of 50 randomized trials (Phytotherapy Research, doi:10.1002/ptr.6708) reported modest pooled reductions versus control: total cholesterol about 16.8 mg/dL, LDL about 18.5 mg/dL, triglycerides about 15.7 mg/dL, and fasting glucose about 15.2 mg/dL. HbA1c fell about 0.45 points. Inflammation markers CRP and TNF-alpha did not change significantly in that pool.
A separate 17-trial analysis found oil lowered fasting glucose more than powder (PMID 30873688). In 11 blood-pressure trials with 860 people, readings fell about 3.3/2.8 mmHg more than control over roughly 8 weeks, and powder outperformed oil in that analysis (Sahebkar et al., Journal of Hypertension, 2016, PMID 27512971).
Those trials were short, often small, and used different products and doses. They measure lab markers, not long-term health outcomes. Black seed oil is not a substitute for prescribed care.
What oil of oregano has, and has not, been studied for
A 2020 randomized trial in 75 adults with chronic sinus symptoms found larger symptom-score improvements with an oregano-oil nasal spray than with fluticasone or placebo (Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge, doi:10.56042/ijtk.v19i2.35368). A 40-person pilot reported improvement in perennial nasal-allergy symptoms with an oregano nasal spray versus placebo. Neither tested swallowed softgels.
Human data on swallowed oregano oil is thin: one often-cited open-label study had 14 adults and no placebo group, with a supplement company among the affiliations. Carvacrol capsule trials come mostly from one research group and have not been widely replicated.
Lab studies show carvacrol can damage bacteria in a dish. That is not evidence about infections in people. We could not reload the NIH LiverTox oregano monograph text on October 21, 2026, so we are not quoting it. See a clinician for an infection, and ask before using oregano oil in pregnancy.
Does taking them together work better?
No published human trial has tested the combination. Claims of synergy come from brands, not studies.
If you want the doses used in black seed trials, a plain black seed oil around 1 to 2 g/day is closer than most combos. Resilia states 200 mg of black seed oil per 2-softgel serving. MAJU states 200 mg of black seed oil plus 300 mg of oregano oil per 2-softgel serving. Both figures are brand-stated on October 21, 2026.
Combo products we checked
| Feature | Per serving | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Resilia oregano softgels | Brand says both 6,000 mg of oil of oregano and the equivalent of 6,000 mg of fresh oregano, plus 200 mg black seed oil and 165 mg carvacrol. 2 softgels a day. Bag count not listed, so no price per serving. | $34.99 for one bag. $54.99 buy 2 get 1. $79.99 buy 3 get 2. |
| MAJU oregano with black seed | 300 mg oregano oil in olive oil plus 200 mg black seed oil. 30 servings. Carvacrol not stated. | $79.00 for 60 softgels. |
A 6,000 mg headline is not the same thing as 6,000 mg of oil in the softgel. Do not compare that number with MAJU's 300 mg as if they were measured the same way.
Who should look at this, and who should skip
Who Might Like This
- ✓Adults curious about black seed for cholesterol or glucose markers, with a clinician's OK.
Who Should Consider Alternatives
- ×Pregnant or trying to conceive.
- ×On diabetes or blood-pressure medicine, or blood thinners, without a clinician's OK.
- ×Scheduled surgery, or a history of reflux. Oregano oil often causes heartburn.
Our verdict
If you are choosing one, black seed oil has far more human research. Oil of oregano is mostly lab-stage for swallowed products, and the combo itself is untested. Choose on label transparency: exact milligrams of each oil, and a third-party certificate you can open.

How we checked
On October 21, 2026, we checked Resilia's product page (prices, the 6,000 mg wording, 200 mg black seed oil, 165 mg carvacrol, and 2 softgels a day) and MAJU's Shopify feed (300 mg oregano oil, 200 mg black seed oil, 30 servings, $79 for 60 softgels).
Resilia's page uses both '6,000 mg of oil of oregano' and 'the equivalent of 6,000 mg of fresh oregano.' We did not find a softgel count, so we omitted price per serving. We did not re-check an Amazon star rating, so none is shown.
The pooled black-seed numbers are the figures reported in the cited meta-analyses. The LiverTox oregano monograph returned a script shell, not article text, so it is not quoted.
Frequently Asked Questions
No study has tested the pair. Each is generally tolerated short-term by healthy adults. Skip both in pregnancy unless a clinician says otherwise, and ask first if you take glucose or blood-pressure medicine.
Black seed oil has meta-analyses of randomized trials. Oregano oil's human evidence is limited, and the better trials used a nasal spray rather than a swallowed softgel.
Black seed oil has been studied for cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood-pressure markers. Oregano oil has mainly been studied in the lab and as a nasal spray.
Stomach upset for both. Heartburn and nausea show up more often with higher oregano doses. Black seed may add to glucose or blood-pressure drugs.
Roughly 1 to 3 grams a day of oil or powder in many trials. Resilia and MAJU each list 200 mg of black seed oil per serving, which is brand-stated and well below those trial doses.
Ask a clinician. We could not reload the LiverTox monograph text on October 21, 2026, so we are not quoting a specific warning. We would not treat a swallowed oregano supplement as established for pregnancy.
