Starface Review
Research-based review. The star shape is the marketing. The hydrocolloid is the part that can cover a whitehead. It is not an acne treatment.

Quick Summary
Hydro-Stars are colored hydrocolloid. They can absorb fluid from a surfaced whitehead and keep you from picking. There is no independent trial of Starface itself.
What Starface is
Starface is a US brand known for yellow star-shaped pimple patches. The core product, Hydro-Stars, is a hydrocolloid patch, the same material class as Mighty Patch Original and drugstore dots. The star shape and colors are meant to be seen. Starface pitches wearing them openly rather than hiding them.
Do Starface patches work?
On whiteheads, expect the same modest help as other hydrocolloid patches. In Chao et al. (2006), 20 people wore a hydrocolloid acne dressing or plain skin tape for a week. Severity fell from 1.8 to 0.43 with hydrocolloid, versus 1.08 to 0.8 with tape. The hydrocolloid let through 7.4% of UVB light, versus 38% for tape. That dressing was 3M's, not Starface.
Starface's own study: the brand reports that 87% of 23 participants saw a difference within 6 hours, in a 5-day study. Read it carefully. Twenty-three people is very small. "Saw a difference" is self-reported, with no control patch. It was run for the brand, and we did not find it in a journal.
On deep or cystic spots, hydrocolloid stays on the surface. Cleveland Clinic dermatology says patches suit surface whiteheads. See do pimple patches work?.
Hydro-Stars vs salicylic acid stars
| Feature | What it is | Price we could read |
|---|---|---|
| Hydro-Stars | Hydrocolloid, no drug. The brand says wear 6 or more hours, or overnight. | $14.99 |
| Hydro-Stars + salicylic acid | Hydrocolloid plus salicylic acid. Starface directions say 1 to 3 times a week. That is a different product from plain Hydro-Stars. | $12.99 |
Salicylic acid is an FDA-monograph acne ingredient (21 CFR 333.310). Using it under a patch can dry or irritate skin. Follow the label limits. This page does not claim the patch treats acne.
Brand claims to read carefully
- "2x stickier, 50% more absorbent" is Starface's claim. We found no published test method or comparison product.
- The brand site shows a 4.5 rating from 3,219 reviews (brand-hosted, Nov 2, 2026). We do not use that in a score.
Downsides
- Visible by design, which you may not want at work.
- Price per patch is similar to Mighty Patch Original, and higher than store-brand dots that use the same material. See best pimple patches.
- Adhesive sensitivity is possible with any patch. Colophonium-type resins can cause contact allergy.
